The Man Behind the Curtain

The Man Behind the Curtain

We finally got a Ben flashback episode and it was a good one. I was looking forward to learning more about the Dharma Initiative, but I should have known that they wouldn’t advance that mythology, that gets on my nerves, lets move on… The flashbacks followed Ben’s early years, from his birth through his childhood as well as the infamous “incident” (was that the incident?). When Ben’s mother died after giving birth to him, Ben’s father Roger Linus (aka WorkMan) got a job with the Dharma Initiative. Ben, like many others on the show, is able to see dead people and sees his dead mother. While searching for her he runs into a long haired man who I believe was that eyeliner loving man Richard, and if so those people don’t age. Young Ben reminded me of Harry Potter.

Another important flashback was the purge of the Dharma Initiative. In this flashback the Others / Hostiles gas all of the Dharma people, with the exception of Ben who personally gasses his father. The symptoms caused by this gas reminded me of what the sickness was alleged to have looked like. Perhaps this was how the members of Rousseau’s team were killed.

On the island the events surrounded Ben and Locke’s journey to visit Jacob. When they arrive at Jacob’s house we find out that Jacob is the invisible man, or is he? A spooky voice says “Help Me” to Locke when things start going crazy in Jacob’s house. During the commotion right after Ben tells Jacob to stop “You’ve had your fun” Ben is pushed against the wall and as the camera pans back to the chair we see a shadowy figure, Jacob.

Back on the beach Jack and Juliet have apparently chosen to band together with the other survivors after being accused of conspiring against them. This will lead up to the finale which looks to be an all out war between the others and survivors.

At the end of this episode Locke and Ben are trekking back to the others camp when Ben shows Locke a mass grave filled with Dharma employees. At this point Ben whips out a gun and shoots Locke. Will Locke live or die? What’s the deal with Jacob? What is the Dharma Initiative? Perhaps we will know the answers by 2010.

  2. Holy crap.. I can’t believe Ben shot Locke! That was just.. whoah..

It seems to me the Dharma people were the good guys. I know the gas was meant to be used on ‘the Hostiles’, but well.. in the end the Dharma folks didn’t actually use it.

And didn’t Ben seem like a really whiney child? He had a bad father (like every other Lostie..) but other than that it seemed to me he had a pretty good life…

O man, I really need another Dharma flashback.. I’m lovin’ it! ^^

  4. Did you notice the ring of “ash” as they got close to Jacob’s house? As I remember, I know in voo doo, believers would put ash at the entrances of their houses to keep bad spirits out. In this case, maybe in? Is this to lock ‘Jacob’ in that area on the island?

Also, did anyone put the whole Jacob was shepherd in the Bible and Jack’s father’s name is Christian Shepherd. Just another dead end thought, but one nonetheless.

I’ve really enjoyed this whole season. Great site!

  5. Alex is the daughter of Rousseau. The baby was stolen from her when she gave birth after getting to the island. Ben “adopted” Alex and told her he was his own. He is not her biological daddy!

  6. I did not think that Richard was older than Ben. Did anyone else think that was odd? Why is it that Richard takes orders from Ben? You would think it’s the other way around?

    Excellent Episode!!!

  7. Yeah.. Richard is really strange. He doesn’t seem to age and as you said, he’s taking orders from Ben. Also Ben asks him if he still remembers birthdays. Could he be a fool that is enslaved by time and space, as the brainwashing video said. And why would one of the islands original inhabitants now live in the mainland.. and be the head of Mittelos? Very strange..

  8. I have a few theories and questions. How is it that Alex was born on the Island? She must have been conceived off the island so in fact not Ben’s biological daughter. I also think Kate and Sawyer making love was another experiment, thats why it was so easy for Kate to crawl out of her cage. Remember when Juliette told Sun that woman become more fertile and Men;s sperm count increases dramaticly on the island so I’m sure Kates the next to be preggers.

  10. I think that Rousseau was one of DHARMA. Maybe she is Amy, the little girl which gave Ben dolls for birthday when he was kid. We saw her when she is little girl and then no more. Maybe she survived the attack on DHARMA people and then run into the jungle, or they try to brainwash her but they do not succeded. I do not trust her. I think that she is lying.
